Learning Matters! Update

We’ve welcomed a new student to our adult literacy ministry. Norma is college-educated from her native Guatemala. Our tutors will be helping her to improve her English reading and writing skills so she can achieve her goals at her place of employment and in our                    community. Our GSLC ministry is  ffiliated with LearningQuest-Stanislaus Literacy Centers in Modesto. They train our tutors and generously share their expertise and curriculum with us. They are currently sponsoring a scholarship drive, “Building Hope”, with the Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation matching pledges up to $40,000! If you believe in the power of building hope in others, you can contribute at BuildingHope.LQSLC.com. Or check with us for other ways to donate to give hope through learning to individuals in our Turlock community. Thank you! ~Beth Kirkpatrick & and Pam Youngdale, Site Coordinators

Learning Matters! Turns Three

I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. Phil. 4:13

On June 30, 2014 six adult students and four Good Shepherd tutors began a voyage of “bringing hope through learning” as our adult literacy/HSE ministry at the Cooper House was launched. Learning Matters!, affiliated with LearningQuest-Stanislaus Learning Centers, has continued to thrive and harvest results in our third year of being “community focused to be community engaged.” Some highlights of the past year include:

  • Rudy (September) and Sonia (December) earned their HSE (High School Equivalency) diplomas. Rudy also received the “Outstanding Achievement Award in Literacy” at the LearningQuest October graduation ceremony for 108 students. We are SO proud of both of these students (and their tutors) for their perseverance in achieving their goals!

  • Ten-trained GSLC tutors have now touched the lives of nearly 20 students since 2014.

  • Pam and Beth made a presentation about Learning Matters! at the Best Practices for Ministry conference in Phoenix, Arizona, in February.

  • For the second year, GSLC sponsored a table at the annual Celebrate Literacy! awards luncheon put on by Stanislaus Partners in Education (SPIE) in March.

  • With a generous financial donation and the talents of Lighthouse Communications (Linda Buie), we have a beautiful color brochure to distribute and promote to our community.

Currently our student census is low, typical of the summer months. But we understand there is an “ebb and flow” to this type of ministry, and we strongly believe that there is a great need for it. So, we push forward with faith in God’s provision. In the next few months:

  • Beth has been invited to share with a group of Central Valley literacy coordinators how she uses a specialized curriculum to help dyslexic adult learners.

  • Beth and Pam will be travelling to Columbus, Indiana, to present at Best Practices for Ministry: Heartland. We are eager to share our journey in the field of adult literacy to help other churches understand how they too can help in the battle against illiteracy.

  • We’ll continue exploring more ways to expose Learning Matters! to others, praying that God will guide them to us!

Finally, we are grateful for our current team of tutors, the heart of our ministry: Lyn Brock, Marcie Fernandes, Tom Hoy, Linda Jahn, Beth Kirkpatrick (site-coordinator), Pam Youngdale (site-coordinator). With God’s strength we are making a difference for the Turlock community!
